When a parent discovers that their child has a developmental difference such as ASD, they are often faced with denial, fears, and concerns that can be overwhelming. Sadly, parents may not be dealing with the losses, hurdles, and additional financial battles, but also the judgmental attitudes from society. Like many living with invisible disabilities, society often assumes the disability is a behavioral or personality issue. For families from the BME community, the situation is worse because it is regarded as a taboo or some sort of punishment for sins committed by either parent hence being one of the reasons for shadowing the child from the public. On the other hand, discrimination plays a role when it comes to the provision of services.
The first recommendation to parents of a child with a disability is to try to find another parent of a child with a disability, preferably one who has chosen to be a parent helper and seek his or her assistance. This is what inspired Elizabeth Sunduzwayo, founder of New Hope North East in order to help other parents in the same situation as hers because it is incredibly a huge challenge to raise up a child with a disability. In many cases, it is a 24/7 job that leaves parents/carers with no time to educate themselves, work, or socialize with friends even within their own community. Many parents become isolated, depressed, and impoverished due to various barriers emanating from different angles. New Hope North East, is passionate to facilitate a platform where disabled children/young people and their parents/carers can have their voices heard and their needs met.
