NHNE provides arts and crafts, which is the most loved activity among children and young people. These creative, hands on sessions support all participants by encouraging imagination, communication, and problem solving. They are especially valuable for children and young people with disabilities, helping to build motor skills, confidence, emotional expression, and a sense of inclusion. For their mainstream peers from diverse backgrounds, arts and crafts promote creativity, cultural understanding, and positive social interaction. By taking part together, all young people share experiences that strengthen empathy, celebrate diversity, and help everyone feel valued and included.
Rhythm & Roots is a cultural music project funded by the Mayor’s Opportunity Fund, that brings children, families, and communities together through the power of sound, story, and dance. Children and young people will engage with 15 music and song writing workshops, to learn about music styles from around the world, and write and record their own song.
Safe Shields is a community led initiative by New Hope North East, supported by the Police and Crime Commissioner, designed to educate, empower, and amplify the voices of disabled children and young people and parents/adults from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds in South Shields and surrounding areas. The project will run from February 2025 to February 2026.
This work responds to the growing need for awareness, safety, and proactive action around hate crimes.
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria, Susan Dungworth, launched the Commissioner’s Community Fund in response to the civil disorder that took place in Summer 2024. The fund supports communities and grassroots projects that provide locally designed support for vulnerable people, offer positive diversionary activities, and help individuals who want to turn their lives around. It aims to strengthen neighbourhoods, rebuild trust, and increase community cohesion in the wake of the recent civil unrest.
The fund aims to empower local people and provide communities affected by hate crime and anti social behaviour with additional support to recover from the disturbing events. It is designed to strengthen community safety, create and sustain safe spaces, and promote positive relationships within neighbourhoods. By bringing people together and fostering a stronger sense of belonging, the fund seeks to rebuild trust, resilience, and cohesion across communities throughout Northumbria. Chosen by parents, carers, and the wider community, this project offers families a chance to design and create their own cultural and traditional outfits. Their creations will be showcased at a community event, celebrating creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural identity, with prizes awarded.

New Hope North East provides valuable support to parents/carers of disabled children/young people. We deliver this in three ways.
Firstly, we offer parents/carers one-to-one person-centred advisory meetings with our dedicated staff. During these meetings, we provide information and advice, signpost to relevant agencies and authorities, and guide members through applying for relevant support services and referrals.
Secondly, we run a monthly Parent/Carer Support and Wellbeing forum. This is a member-led supportive network through which parents/carers can connect with one another, benefit from their shared knowledge and experiences, and discuss the challenges they face with others who understand the complexities of raising a disabled child. We also invite representatives from local authorities and services to give talks and provide advice to our forum members.
Finally, we encourage parents/carers to attend local meetings, empowering them to advocate for their own needs and aspirations, and speak out on the issues that affect their families.
